HUD Secretary, Dr. Ben Carson, Visits the Commons at Livingston

Recently, Dr. Ben Carson, the new Secretary of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), visited Ohio as a part of his listening tour.  He has expressed that he is doing this tour because he is interested in learning more about affordable multifamily rental housing. During his visit, he toured the Commons at Livingston, a permanent supportive housing community for disabled and formerly homeless veterans. National Affordable Housing Trust (NAHT) secured the LIHTC investment for the development of the Commons at Livingston from Huntington National Bank, and it is owned and managed by National Church Residences, a member of Stewards of Affordable Housing for the Future (SAHF).

NAHT’s Chief Financial Officer, Doug Bates, Yianni Vitales, Senior Vice President for Huntington National Bank and National Church Residences’ Executive Vice President of External Affairs and Strategic Initiatives, Michelle Norris, had an opportunity to show Dr. Carson how permanent supportive housing offers residents stability and a pathway toward self-sufficiency. Additionally, they discussed how service-enriched housing, like the Commons at Livingston, offer residents a chance at a new life in a way that’s cost-effective for government and affordable for the resident.

Dr. Carson echoed the belief that providing housing for the most vulnerable people in society is a top priority of HUD. He acknowledged that the Commons at Livingston was a good example of how a private-public partnership should work to create more housing that is affordable to low and very low-income individuals and families.

During his three-day visit to Ohio, Dr. Carson also toured Van Buren Village, which is owned and managed by Volunteers of America – also a member of SAHF. His visit included tours of rental home communities in both urban and rural areas.

NAHT is proud and excited to have been a part of this tour.
