In an era where the importance of stable housing has been accentuated by the global events of 2020, the challenges facing low-income, Black, and Latinx communities due to decades of underinvestment and inequitable policies are more pressing than ever. To address this, the Stewards of Affordable Housing for the Future (SAHF) launched the Outcomes Initiative in late 2013, supported by the Kresge Foundation.
SAHF is a nonprofit collaborative of 13 multi-state nonprofit affordable housing providers.
This report seeks to foster collaboration between the affordable housing and healthcare sectors, both of which are beginning to recognize their overlapping interests and goals. Despite some progress, there remains a knowledge gap that hampers the creation of effective partnerships. The report features nine case studies from across the U.S., illustrating successful collaborations that have expanded housing opportunities aimed at improving health outcomes for vulnerable populations. These initiatives demonstrate how healthcare funding and focused investments can serve as catalysts for expanding housing stock. While challenges exist, the report underscores that with strong leadership and shared vision, housing can be effectively utilized as a means to improve community health.
